Avalanches are triggered by t changes in both the internal and external forces that hold a mass of snow together on a slope. The factors include overloading, temperature, shearing, and vibration.
The weight of the snow itself may overcome its natural adhesion. A rise in temperature tends to weaken the bonds of a snow mass J a drop retards its settlement. A skier cutting across a slope or snow falling from a tree may shear off a huge slab of packed snow and send it rumbling down as mountain.
