An association of cattle raisers, Performance Registry International, has set standards for meat-type steers which may serve as a measuring device for the industry, says Curtis Mast, beef cattle specialist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
These cattlemen are interested in developing cattle that will appeal most to the housewife as she shops in her favorite grocery. To get this job done properly, there must be some way to measure the performance of the bulls which sire the steers.
The way to do this is to measure how a* number of the sire’s offspring meet criteria set up for meat-type steers. PRI says the steer must produce 1.3 pounds of carcoss for each day of age. This
