Would it also be the height of optimism to hope that the new electronic calculators will prove efficient and fast enough to dispense with a few thousand of the present manual sleuths, with* a resultant cut in thfe IRS payroll? Or will still more personnel be called into service to feed and interpret the findings of the new machines?
Since it is claimed that the new device (or devices) will plug many a tax “leak” of the past, who will benefit from the increased gross income tax revenue—the bureaucrats, or downtrodden John Q. Public ?
We make no claim to having the answers to these or probably scores of other questions which the use of mechanical brains has likely raised in the minds of our contemporaries. But what all of us would more likely welcome would be news of a gadget which would enable the little fellow, who pays the lion’s share of the.income tax, to file an honest return without the annual struggle with facts and figures that always leaves him just a pace or two away from the psychiatrist’s couch before the chore is done and his return is on its way to the tax collector.
