Henry L. Lam, State American Legion Commander for the Department of Virginia, awarded the Distinguished Service Medal to John O. Marsh, Jr., on behalf of The American Legion for his efforts in fostering Americanism and his contributions to national security. Commander Lam presented the medal at the annual convention of Virginia Legionnarires at Virginia Beach.
Commander Lam stated that Mr. Marsh was the unanimous selection of the Executive Committee of The American Legion, Department of Virginia, which met last March and selected recipient of the award, which is presented at the next following state convention. The Distinguished Service Medal is one of the highest awards conferred by The American Legion.
In presenting the medal Commander Lam cited the recipient's work In programs that related both to examining the nature and dimensions of the Communist threat to American security, as well as programs that emphasize the American Heritage He also made special mention of the number of addresses given to audiences throughout Virginia and outside the State by Mr. Marsh on the subject of Communist aggression.
Previous recipients of the Distinguished Service Medal include: Mrs. Mary Stalcup Markward, Harry F. Byrd, Sr., John S. Battle, Sr., Walter S. Robertson, Dr. William T. Sanger, John J. Wicker, Jr., J. Lindsay Almond, Jr., Lt. General Lewis B. (Chesty) Puller and William E. Blewett, Jr.
