George D. Fincham, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Fincham of Sperryville, is serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, a unit which participated in ‘“Exercise War Dance,” a training exercise off the Coast of California, August 27-31.
The exercise, which involved 11 ships and 10,000 men of the First Fleet, centered around a fast carrier striking force which was opposed by submarines and aircraft. Air opposition was provided by jet and propellerdriven aircraft, including medium bombers, using all types of weapons.
The exorcise began with a hypothetical limited war situation which escalated rapidly and culminated in a supposed general war.
The special exercise was commanded by Vice Admiral R. T. S. Keith, commander of the First Fleet.
Army Specialist Four William R. Hawkis, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar B. Hawkins, Washington, Va., was one of 3,500 “Aggressors” who recently tested the combat readiness of the 1st Armored, Division at. Fort Hood, Texas, in Exercise IRON FIST.
During the six-day maneuver Specialist Hawkins and other “Aggressors” selected from Fort Hood’s 2d Armored Division subjected the 1st Division’s personnel to simulated attacks with chemical, biological and nuclear weapons as well as with conventional armaments.
A liason specialist in Headquarters Battery of the 2d’s 1st Artillery, Hawkins Altered the Army in July 1960.
He attended Rappahannock County High School and was employed by the Rappahannock News before entering the Army.
Pfc. Burke Stationed In Thailand
Pfc. James B. Burke, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis B. Burke of Woodville has arrived near Bangkok, Thailand with the 809th Engineer division, U. S. Army. He reports they are constructing roads and air strips and will probably be there a year.
