The Anal summary of the Virginia Feeder Calf Sales has been received making it possible to answer the questions asked by our cattlemen relative to the standing of our sale as compaared to other sales.
Quality: We dropped to 8th place, tying with the Ornage sale in percentage (38#) Fancy and Choice. Eight sales actually beat us in this respect as the Wytheville Angus and the 1st Winchester sales tied at 43#. The Winchester Shorthorn sale led all Virginia sales with 49# grading AA and A. The Dublin Angus sale was 2nd with 48# and the 2nd Monterey sale 3rd high with 46#.
Prices/ Cwt. As previously reported Rappahannock ranked 2nd with an over-all average of $29.82 per hundred weight while the 2nd Culpeper sale was 1st by receiving $30.35. Rappahannock steers averaged $31.39 (3rd high) and her heifers $25.03 which was 4th from the top.
Prices/Head. Several sales have a 350 pound minimum weight, while others, including our sale, allows a 300 lb. minimum. The three leading sales on a per head basis all hold a 350 lb. minimum and were: 1st Charlottesville $144.85; Culpeper $142.91; and Orange $140.08.
All sales holding to the 300 pound minimum are not known so Rappahannock’s rank in this group of sales can not be determined.
The averages of all of our calves Fold were 453 pounds * and $135.06.
In number head consigned, we ranked 15th with 1239 head sold. As usual the 1st Winchester sale had the largest sale: 2818 head Richmond was 2nd with 1893 head.
Three calf sale held at Winchester offered a total of 4877 head. Staunton’s two sales offered 3096 head. Culpener 2885, and Charlottesville 2757.
The number of head offered by all 32 Virginia sales was 86.390 which brought a total of $4,748,796.(16. Big business!
