On County Schools
A 1963 report on Rappahannock schools has been issued by the school board of the county.
Total number of students enrolled in the county is 1092. Rappahannock High School has 295; Washington Elementary 310; Sperryville Elementary 290; Amissville Graded School has 45; W.A Russell 32; Scrabble Graded 46 and Washington Graded has 74. Sixty-five students from the county attend G.W Carver High School at Rapidan and Criser High in Warren County.
1021 of these students are transported with 19 busses over 202,286 miles at a cost of 16.6 per mile or a cost of $32.90 per pupil. The total cost of this operation per year is $33,590.53. This includes salary of drivers,gas oil, repairs, tires and insurance. Bus replacement costs $12,771.48.
Training of RappahannockCounty teachers is as follows: 14% have Master's degrees; 42% Bachelor's degrees and 44% are professionally trained but without degrees. 65% have been teaching in the county over 5 years and 7% are new here this year.
The minimum salary paid teachers is $3,500 and the county ranks 61st out of 96. In comparison, the surrounding counties pay a minimum salary as f o 11 o w s; Fauquier $3,800; Culpeper $3,700; Page $3,600 ind Warren $4,000. w ‘ Vocational subjects are offered in agriculture, home ecomonlcs and commercial. Music instruction is receiving increased attention and physical education is receiving renewed stress. Phonics is stressed in primary grades and the Joplin Reading Plan which organizes 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade reading instruction on the basis of reading level rather than grade level is practiced in several schools. High school and larger elementary schools have centralized libraries. Cafeterias serve 65,000 lunches each year. Textbooks are adopted on a six-year replacement plan and audiovisual aids, as tape recorders, movie projectors and record players,are supplied.
