Tom Thomas Wins
National Award
Naturalist Tom D. Thomas was presented a cash award of $150 by Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins of Shenandoah National Park, under the Department of the Interior's Incentive Awards Program, at a staff meeting on January 16. Mr. Thomas received the Superior Performance Award for a consistently outstanding job of public contact work. The recommendation, submitted by his supervisor, Chief Park Naturalist E. Ray Schaffner, reads, in part, “By his superior performance, he has demonstrated an ability to win numerous friends, not only for this Park, but for the conservation principles upon which all national parks are founded. In carrying out his interpretive assignments, he has exercised imagination, ingenuity, and judgment far in excess of that required of his present grade or position In addition to the many friends he has made for the National Park Service in his contact with visitors, and, in addition to the number of special programs he haspre sented to groups within the Park during this past year of his permanent assignment to Shenandoah, Mr. Thomas has presented programs to a number of organizations in nearby communities, such as the D. A. R., Luray Chapter; Winchester and Luray Rotary Clubs; Old Fredericktown Garden Club of Winchester; Rappahannock County Lions Club; Pittsburgh Automobile Association and Petersburg Sports Car Club (on tour through Luray); and former and present employees of the Norfolk & Western Railroad at Shenandoah.
