Of Lespedeza?

Lespedeza yields in recent years appear to have dropped considerably according to reports by Rappahannock farmers. Although favorable growing seasons were had for the past two years low yields continued.
While lespedeza never yielded the hay tonnage as compared to other legumes, we simply don’t see the stands enjoyed back In the 30’s or even 40’s. Because of farmers’ concern and our observations, your Agent took the matter up with VPI Agronomist seeking help in determining this summer whether the trouble stemmed from nematodes. This is a possibility that will be investigated further at the proper time.
On the other hand, Howard C. Potts, of the Agronomy Department, reports the following in reply to my inquiry: “The Experiment Station workers have been unable to get any variety of lespedeza to respond economically to anything more than very light applications of fertilizer. This lack of response to increase fertility may, in part, account for the disappointing yields for lespedeza.
Also, with recent years there has been a shift away from the higher yielding Korean kinds' of lespedeza to the lower yielding but better quality Kobe kinds of "lespedeza.”
Kobe can not be relied upon to reseed itself in this area.
At the Orange experiment station Ark. 31CD lespedeza out yielded Korean by 0.2 of a ton, however this seed is not yet available commercially.
