has sponsored the pig project in Rappahannock County. They started out by providing five 4-H'ers with a young registered gilt each. A registered boar was also obtained. Boys and girls raised the gilts under the supervision of the county extension office and 4-H leaders. After these gilts had pigs the 4-H’ers in turn gave a young gilt from the litter to another selected boy or girl until today over 90 purebred gilts and 17 boars have been located throughout the county. This pig chain project has several objectives. One is to improve the quality of the hogs in the county. Perhaps the most important is to give the youngster pride of ownership and the opportunity to improve his knowledge and skills.
