of the previous year to confer with Union General George G. McClellan, following the bloody Seven Days’ Battle. Ironically. Lincoln landed at the same spo^ where the Woodleaf settlers had held their first thanksgiving se»> vice in 1619. It was at Berkeley in the summer of 1862 that “Taps" was composed by Union General Daniel Butterfield and O. W. Norton, one of his buglers. Berkeley was the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his son, President William Henry Harrison, of "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too* fame. Traitor Benedict Arnold plundered the mansion for the British in 1781 and burned the Harrison family portraits on the' front lawn. Although Berkeley suffered heavy damage in the Revolution and during the Civil War, it has been tastefully restored and today stands much as it did during the eighteenth century.
