This would save us the time of stopping on the way'to eat.
After a delicious breakfast, one in which we had plenty to eat,* we hit the road.Because some Catholic boys had to go to mass, we didn't actually get started until about 9:00. The first part of the trip thru Oklahoma was uneventful. Most of the way was just flat land. *We pulled into Missouri at about 1:00 after we had eaten lunch. At around 8:30 p.m. we pulled into St. Louis for the night. We unloaded our gear at Washington University and went to dinner. We were tired and the dinner tasted mighty good. After supper we separated to do what we wanted* Some boys went to the movies, others went bowling, and still others went back to the University to swim and to play basketball. Because of these activities we got in at about 3:30 a.m. and went to bed to get what sleep we could.
August 16, 1963 — This morning we got up "late" at 5:00, even though the trip was the longest* one that we had to make. Everything was late in getting started and we didn’t actually leave St. Louis until about 11:00. The ride to Columbus would be especially long and we knew we wouldn't be in Columbus until late that night.
