Berkeley, up tne j a m e s River from Jamestown. The service took place in Accordance with one of the directives contained in the ‘'Instructions” of the group's j charter. It reads as follows: “Impr wee ordaine that the day of our ships arrivall at the place assigned for plantacon in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perputualy keept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty god.” At least two other thanksgiving services were held in Virginia before the Pilgrims' arrival in Massachusetts. One was held in 1607 at Cape Henry, when the Jamestown colonists first entered the Chesapeake Bay. Another was held in June, 1610 by the survivors of Jamestown’s “starving time”. Of the 490 colonists who had been at Jamestown in the fall of 1609, only 60 were alive the following spring. Abraham Lincholn, in 1863 was the first U. S.
