Cobia Tournament
The "Miss Pam* kicked up a good spray as her skipper,. Capt. L. M. Sparshott,steered her out of the Chesapeake Boat Basin at Kilmarnock and pointed her bow toward cobia fishing waters off Dividing Creek. It was a calm day full erf promise though, an$ the spray was created as the charter boat cut .the wakes of the other 4 boats of the Kilmarnock Sports Fishing Fleet headed in the same direction. The fleet of 5 boats was kicking off the Kilmarnock outdoor writers one day cobia tournament, and participating were writers from Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland. Aboard Capt. Sparshott's craft were Max Ailor of the Richmond Times - Dispatch, Jim Netherwood, Richmond photographer, Jimmy Sparshott, the skipper’s 9th grader son, and the writer.
Bay Big Game The cobia is the big game fish of the Chesapeake Bay. Averaging 40 to 50 pounds, they are fished for with chumming lines and live eels. In addition to being a top game fish the cobia is also an excellent food fish. Nethe* wood, who fishes 12 months each year and mostly in salt water, recommends that the fish be filleted as this removed the backbone which gives the meat a strong taste if frozen for any length of time July and August are top cobia months. And this is Important to the all around angler who is likely to find fresh water fishing at a low ebb -during the summer months.
