Slaughter has been running about comparable periods erf last year since August with an increase, in June, of 15 per cent over the same month last year—based on weekly estimates of federally inspect ed slaughter. Information from the April 1 Cattle On Feed Report indicates the number of animals from cattle on feed should begin declining and about equal last year's number in about 60 to 90 days. Producers are advised to watch for the July 17 report for later information. In Chicago last week, choice grade steers brought $22.50 $23.25, and good grade steers were $19.50-$21.75. Choice grade heifers sold at $21.25$22.50, and good grade heifers brought $18.50-$20.75. Cattle moving through Virginia auctions last week brought these prices: good steers $19.50-$20.50 and good heifers $17.00-$18.00.
Lambs
Lamb prices have passed their seasonal peak. Producers are advised to sell at the earliest possible finish to avoid the usual seasonal decline in lamb prices. Lamb prices in Virginia last week ranged from $24.00$24.75 for prime. $22.75-$23. 00 for choice and $17.00$18.00 for good.
