You may be surprised to learn that agriculture--that is, farming and ranching--Is responsible for more occupational deaths each year than any other major one industry in the United States; In fact, agriculture is the only major industry to show a gradual injury ancf death rate increase during the past fifteen years. During 1962, statistics show that 3,100 men and wompn lost their lives in accidents while working at chores on farms and ranches throughout the United States. Furthermore, fatal accidents comprise only fFvery small proportion of the total injuries sustained. It is reliably estimated that for every fatal farming accident, there are at least 100 serious, crippling or disabling injuries that often require weeks in the hospital and months of convalescence in the home before the injured person can return to normal
