Forestry Survey
Nears Completion
ester for the Virginia'Division of Forestry, reports that a survey of the forest land in Rappahannock County is nearing completion with field work ending about June 30, 1965., Foresters from the United States Forest Service and the Virginia Division of Forestry have been gathering field data for a re-survey of County woodlands which is part of a re-survey of all of the forest land in Virginia. This is the third Forest Survey of Virginia’s timber resources with previous surveys being completed in 1940 and 1957. The survey is being conducted by the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station with the cooperation of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Economic Development, Division of Forestry and the National Forests of Virginia. The survey will provide up to date forestry information which is needed to help formulate programs for sound forest management in the state. Most of the survey work involves the use of aerial photos with survey plots being located in each county. A certain number of plots, based upon the desired degree of accuracy of the survey, are | actually located on the ground i by field survey crews. Field crews will examine almost 7.000 selected sample locations on the ground in Virginia. Of this number, over 4.000 will be on commercial forest land where foresters will gather information such as forest type, tree species age of the trees, height, volume, site, ownership, cutting practices, and logging utilization. Field data sheets are then forwarded to Ashville, N. C. where high speed electronic computers are used to process the data. It is expected that two years will be needed to complete the survey in Virginia with a comprehensive report being published for the entire state after all of the field work is
analyzed. Trees are a renewable resource which, if protected from forest fires and placed under proper forest management, not only bring the landowner financial returns in the form of cash from products harvested but they also increase the value of his land because of the timber or potential timber on it.
