Few accessories have enjoyed such a rapid rise to fashion stardom as sunglasses! Even couture leaders like Courreges are now designing them, and the latest styles range from bombe or skinny rectangular frames to jumbo owl eyes, wrap-arounds with sliced top circles, and lenses narrowed down to slits. Since regular “spectacles” have been going through similar, if less dramatic fashion changes, the world of eyeglasses now provides better looks as well as better vision. However, like any other fashion accessory, glasses must be kept clean., frames in order to be attractive, lenses to let you see well. Many squint lines have been caused by straining to see through smudgy lenses. Rubbing with just a dry cloth smears soil and grease, so glasses should be washed at least once a day to remove finger marks, cosmetics, and dust. This daily bath is indispensable in summer to wash away perspiration, sun lotion, salt water splashes, and sand. A good routine is to immerse glasses., frames and all., in warm suds, then go over them with a well-lathered soft cloth. Optical experts advise wiping lenses from side to side instead of in circles. A soft brush will coax soil from hinges, filigree metalwork, and cutwork. After rinsing, wipe the lenses and frames dry with a clean lintless cloth. Lenses made of unbreakable resin should be washed the same way. In fact, authorities warn against rubbing them with silicone-t r e a t e d paper which tends to scratch and damage resins.
