Traffic accidents are not uncommon in the news, but safety citations are surely a rarity and two Rappahannock men have achieved this distinction. Cited for safety and presented awards Thursday were Joel L. Jenkins of Flint Hill and Mitchell Jenkins, Sperryville. Both men are mail carriers on the star route from Culpeper to Front Royal and vice versa. The award was given by the National Safety Council and the Post Office Department, and the presentation was made by Frank J. Brizzi, of the Washington Region of the Post Office Department on behalf of thePostJ master General, Lawrence F. O’Brien. In making the presentation of the gold medals, Mr. Brizzi told the carriers that this award is earned not given. The standard of professional driving performance required to earn the Safe Driver Award demands the very best driving skill, and the strict observance of award rules by postal management to uphold these high standards. Joel L. Jenkins has a total of 32 years service, dating from 1933 and. received a similar citation in 1956. He estimates he has driven 965, 000 miles on his 64 mile route.
