Dear Editor?
Mr. Harris was asking about the Zoning Committee. Why not let the sleeping dog lie? He complained about the dust from the rock quarry. I realize there is no dust, or fumes from newspaper writing, or real estate business, but all of the people in our County are not in Mr. Harris’ position.
To have roads, there must be rock quarries, and to get the crushed stone to the job trucks are being used at the present age. If Mr. Harris thinks any of the drivers are racing, all he has to do is to get the license number of the truck, or trucks, and make a complaint in person. There are farms in Rappahannock raising various products—suppose some one moves into our county and objects to the odor of the spray put on by planes. That to some might be far more objectionable than a little dust. Mr. Gentry had a quarry site on his farm and he wanted to sell the rock, so why should anyone object—the land is his and assume he is paying his share of taxes on same. In years past most everyone worked hard in this county to survive, now there are so many who have retired from something, or another coming into Rappahannock telling us what we should do. There are still natives here that are trying to make a living—looking forward to drawing Social Security—not retirement from some Government job. If all of us had left we would not need any roads—we could have left our cars at Waterloo Bridge, and hired an ass to ride back to our old home site. Rappahannock is not altogeth er a land of milk and honey— some of us are still working, so why not get out, or shut up if things don't suit any of the new-comers. Around Sperryville we have some very nice folks who have retired, such as Cols. Bittle and Cosden. They seem toenjoy living in our midst without trying to change our way of life.
