Tree Seedlings May
Be Ordered Now
Landowners interested in setting out forest tree seedlings should get their order in soon to the Virginia Division of Forestry. Seedlings can be safely planted from now until . April 15, anytime the ground is not frozen, excessively wet or powder dry. Orders to date have been slower than normal states Dallas G. Wllfong, Jr., District Forester, for the Northern Piedmont District, probably because landowners are concerned about the droughty condition of the soil. A good rain will probably bring with it a flood of seedling orders to the Division of Forestry and, warns Wilfong, some landowners may not get their seedlings when they want them. Under normal conditions, it takes one to two weeks to process an order and lift, package and deliver the seedlings to the buyer. But wet weather at the nurseries and a large number of orders will make it less likely that an individual will get his order on the date he specifies. Orders are handled on a firstcome, first-served basis and individuals can cancel an order of postpone delivery so long as they do so before the trees are delivered. These state-grown forest tree seedlings are sold at cost and are for reforestation purposes only. Order blanks can be obtained from any Service Forester or Chief Forest Warden, from the headquarters of the Virginia Division of Forestry in Charlottes ville, and from the County Agent or Soil Conservation Service.
