ine larger grant provides training four medical and two dental students, who may be chosen from any accredited teaching institution in the nation. The instruction is calculated to direct students’ atten^ tion to the problems of evaluating community needs and developing programs best geared to patient needs and community resources.
A possible by-pro<Juct could be influencing students either to enter the field of public health or to practice in rural areas. Presently two of the Department’s local health directors are doctors who were trainees under a similar program using state funds. The nursing grant is expected to strengthen instruction in new concepts and procedure^
concerning care to patients with pulmonary tuber culosis and other long-term respiratory diseases. It will provide 10 days of instruction for eight nurses in April. These will be chosen from professional nurses in general and special hospitals and from public health and visiting nurse services where care is provided for tubercu losis or other chronic respira tory conditions. The Bureau of Public Health Nursing is hopeful of receiv ing grants that will provide for a second training period in October and a third in January, thus providing training for 24 nurses within the next 13 months.
