period from when he en~ listed as a privsie in the Richmond Light Infantry Blues In 1911, through duty on the Mexican Border,, having been mustered into federal service, to active duty in France in World War I, attaining the rank of Major. The Virginia State Dental Association honored Dr. Hughes at their annual meeting in 1965 presenting him with a Resolution, citing his service as without equal. Also in 1965 the Scarab, official Organ of the Alumni Association of the Medical College of Virginia, hailed him as *The Man of the Hour". He was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree in June by the Medical College of Virginia. He has always been active in the Alumni Association and served as president in 19191920.
He is a member of theAmerir can Denture Society, a fellow of the American College of Dentists, member of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, American Legion and Sons of Confederate Veterans, and St. Stephens Episcopal Church. In addition to his interest in many other organizations he is the author of numerous published articles on work in his field. #mong his avocations are fox hunting and gardening. Dr. Hughes served as Master of the Fox Hounds of the Deep Run Hunt Club from 19341945 and from 1948 to 1950. Last year his garden in Goochland County, which he cultivates himself, produced a bumper crop of vegetables. We salute a forjner Rappahannock resident, John Mortimer Hughes.
