Medicare & You
The health Insurance program, known best by the term “medicare", will be effective July 1, 1966. It dalls for two kinds of benefits. One of these ...the hospital insurance program... will help you pay your bills for doctors services and for certain other medical services.
The medical insurance program pays 80% of the reasonable costs or charges for covered services, except for the first $50 in a calendar year. Since the program does not begin until July 1, 1966, no expense before that date can count for 1966. This program is voluntary...and calls for monthly payments of $3 per person. Everyone over 65 can qualify, except certain aliens who have neither resided in this country for a period of 5 years nor have become entitled to social security benefits. Although you can qualify for this voluntary medical insurance protection without too much difficulty, you do have to enroll. Persons who are not entitled to social security monthly benefits must enroll for hospital and medical benefits. Persons who become age 65 before January 1 of next year must enroll between September of this year and March 31 of next year. If you fail to enroll in time, the rate may be slightly higher and you will lose valuable protection when you later enroll. If you become 65 after December 31 of this year, your enrollment period starts with the third month
