Apples and Youth
Dear Editor: I am a resident of Fairfax County and weekend enthusiast; booster, and landowner of Rap pahannock County, who is concerned about the reported shortage of apple pickers - and desire to do something about it. I have no axes to grind nor apples to polish myself, but it seems a shame to have to import labor and even then experience a shortage when there are so many Virginians! After considerable musing on the subject, I have what seems to be a workable solution and present it to you for your encouragement or discouragement. Why not enlist the aid of high school students in Fairfax and nearby counties? They could be motivated by 1) Desire to come to the aid of Virginia farmers and demonstrate that youth is not as soft as some say,. 2) Desire for healthful outdoor activity with a purpose, and 3) Money.
