Roy James holds a huge hornet’s nest which he found in the boxwood bush at the home of Mrs. Ritchie Colvin near Amissville. The nest measured 47i inches in circumference. Hornets were the first papermakers. They make paper nests from wood and plant fibers which they have chewed. The female starts the nest in spring making a few nest cells in which she lays eggs. When the young hatch and mature they become workers and help enlarge the nest, gather food and rear additional broods.
