To Lead Parade
Offically the United States Navy Band appearing in Flint Hill next Thursday came into existance on March 4, 1925, the day Calvin Coolidge was inagurated President of the United States. He siged a special act of the 68th. Congress recognizing this band as the permanent representative of the United States Navy. Since 1925 the annual tours authorized by acts of Congress and approved by the President have made it possible for vast audiences outside of the Nations Capital to enjoy the varied programs provided by this band. Under Presidents Coolidge, Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson, the band has played before appreciative audiences throughout the entire continental United States as well as in South America, Canada, Germany, Puerto Rico, Panama, Haiti, and the Virgin Islands. In 1937 this band had the esteemed pleasure of being the featured musical attraction at the famed Canadian National Exhibition. In 1964, with 3 million in attendance, the band made its 6th appearance at the Exhibition - more than any other foreign band. The United States Navy Band under the able direction of Lt. Commander Anthony Mitchell, consists of 134 enlisted musicians and 3 officers. From this group come the smaller bands for funerals, guard mounts, etc. The duties of this organization encompass just about every phase of music from the arrival and departure of visiting foreign dignataries to state dinners and functions. Aside from the wonderful music the band produces, another reason for its wide spread popularity is the fact that it is always in the public eye and ear. This band has brought joy to countless millions through its appearances on radio and television - thus bringing its delightful music to the greatest possible listening audiences at home and abroad.
