Traffic safety experts theorize that the average motorist* does not realize how slowly %he vehicle ahead of him is moving until it is too late to avoid a collision. Under normal conditions, recognition of the emblem would provide ample time for the motorist to safely reduce his speed.
During National Farm Safety Week—July 24-30—special emphasis is being placed on the SMV emblem to promote its use and to acquaint the motorist'with its meaning. Leon Urben, director of farm safety activities for the National Safety Council, says, “even though there are more than 100,000 SMV emblems in use, we still have a big task ahead in educating the motoring public and the owners of the more than 11 million slow-moving vehicles estimated to be in use today.”
