New York, July 25 - Rappahannock County’s economy is running in high gear, according to a nationwide survey of business activity, recently completed. Local residents, with more money available to them than in former years, have been spending a record amount for goods and services. The findings are contained in a new, copyrighted study by Sales Management, entitlec "Survey of Buying Power". It presents data on income and spending for communities in all parts of the country. The net earnings of Rappahannock County residents were at a high level, it shows. Their spendable income, after deduction for personal taxes, amounted to more than $6,517,000. What this was equivalent to on a family basis, was found by dividing the income by the number of households in the area. The average per household came to $4,655, a rise over the prior year’s $4,420. How did local residents make use of the extra cash they had at their disposal? The report shows that they spent it with less restraint than in other years. They went in for more luxurious living, buying better grades of food, clothing and household equipment, spending more for leisure-time activities and putting more into investments. Rappahannock County’s retail merchants, as a consequence, had a big year. They ended up with a sales volume of $2,184,000. The survey shows, for each community, the amount of retail business actually done by local stores in comparison with the amount that could have been done if consumers had. spent up to theft- full 6apacity.
It does thi6 through a “buying power index”, which measures market strength on the basis of income, population and sales activity. Rappahannock County's index rating is .0015, which means that it is believed capable of producing that percentage of the nation's retail business.
Since less than that was accounted for last year, .0008 percent, the conclusion is that some of the local purchasing potential has not yet been attained.
