• EDITOR’S NOTB-This ii a record kept by * Confederate eoldier daring the Civil War and will be published' in a aerie* of article* in the Rappahannock New*. . The eoldier, George Washington For Hummer, wa* bora in Loudoun County, Virginia, on November SO, 1827. He caught the spirit of ’61 and enlisted Hay 24 of that year with the Loudoun Cavalry in the service of the Confederacy. He often referred laughingly to the fact that he did not surrender until 20 days after Gen. Lee gave up the cause at Appomattox.
At the close of the war he returned to the farm in Loudoun and later that year received an appointment with the U.S. Patent OOfice and moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked until h'ls1 death January 13, 1914. It seems ironic that after surviving four years of war Mr. Hummer was struck by a hospital ambulance in Washington and died two days later of injuries sustained.
He wrote his war record m September of 1909 from notes kept during the conflict.
