Pest Bird Control
Demonstration Set
Arrangements have been completed to have Nelspn Swink, Wildlife Biologist, U.S. Department of Interior, to conduct demonstrations on pest bird poisoning techniques in Rappahannock on August 22. While this method is difficult at best, it is important that producers of corn and tree fruits gain knowledge of all known control measures. In recent years pest birds have caused thousands of dollars damage to corn and even greater damage to apples. Seemingly, birds, blackbirds and starlings in particular prefer the biggest, reddest apples which grow in tops of trees. Demonstrations will be held at C. E. Johnson’s Atha Brown Orchard at 10 a. m. and at John R. Moore’s home orchard at 2 p. m. Mr. Swink will also discuss and describe other methods of preventing bird damage to fruit and field crops. All interested farmers and orchardist will be welcomed at the demonstrations.

The Rappahannock Lions Club held its annual picnic for members, families and guests on Red Oak Mountain last Wednesday evening.
Food, fun, conversation and games were enjoyed by the approximately forty people attending in the cool, but very hazy weather, and the leading topic of the evening was the experience of Lion President Stuart, who with Mrs. Stuart, fwas the first arrival at the lookout tower.
