Burials at Arlington, the largest of the national cemeteries have increased by more than a third since the death of President Kennedy, and now average more than 25 a day. Last month cemetery officials opened a new 30-acre tract taken from adjacent Fort Myer. With this addition, Arlington now encompasses 462 acres, more than twice the original 221 acres designated by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton in 1864. John Metzler, cemetery superintendent, says the national publicity Arlington received from President Kennedy’s interment made more Americans aware of its beauty and historic meaning.
