volunteered to go down and capture them. They captured 307. Capt. Evans counted them as they went in the court house yard. I heard him say there were 307. We captured that day over seven hundred. About the 1st of December the 8th Virginia was put in Pickett's Brigade and we went into winter quarters nearCenterville. From the 23rd of December I was with my old company, the Loudoun Cavalry until the 1st of February 1862. About the middle of February I went home sick and remained until the 8th of March. I had to leave then, being in danger of being captured since the enemy was at Leesburg. I was still quite unwell, and my father and mother were both sick, which made it very hard for me to leave. I felt that it was doubtful that I would ever see them again, but the good Lord was kind to us and spared us all to meet again. My wife and children were young, and if I was not killed, I expected to see them again.
