Seven Pines. We did not get in the battle the first day, but did the next, the 1st of June. We had a great surpiise; our men had stacked arms, and were very busy plundering a camp the enemy had been driven out of the day before. I was a little ahead of anyone else when the enemy opened fire on us, uncomfortably close. They were concealed in a piece of fallen timber. The men ran to their guns and they were ordered to charge into the fallen timber, when they did, driving the enemy several hundred yatds before they were called back. Maj. Thrift was mortallj wounded in that battle. We returned to our old camp the next day, near Richmond, where we remained until the 27th of June.
