* The battle commenced about two or two-thirty o’clock with nine companies of the 8th ' Virginia numbering 375 muskets. I think it was near five o’clock when I conducted the 18th Mississippi Regiment into the fight; the 17th Mississippi went in later, conducted by Col. White. Two companies of the 13th Mississippi came to us sometime in the afternoon, altogether between 1700 and 1800 men. I was present when Gen. Evans told Col. Hunton the Yankees had gone into the woods. He told him to go to the edge of the woods, form in line of battle, charge through the woods and drive them into the river. Col. Hunton formed his line at the edge of the woods, but before he started he told me to ride through the woods to see where the Yankees were and to come back and tell him. I found
