They have learned that social security provides a basic protection during their working years as well as a retirement fund. This is the original intent of the program; to provide a base upon which the individual through his own initiative, and sometimes with the assistance of his employer, would build a protection against the day he was no longer the breadwinner. Thirty years ago the first contributions were made to the trust fund. During those 30 years the protection provided by social security has expanded to cover not only the worker against loss of income at retirement, but also the worker and his family against loss of income due to death or disability.
In the last few years there has been a rising interest by the people in their individual protection under social security. “This is very gratifying as we have always encouraged people to learn more about the program and now we are seeing this happening,” said Mrs. Daly.
