In Highway Crashes
With 1941’s all-time high of 1,110 traffic deaths already topped this year, Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr.; Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, warned that the latter part of December is always the most dangerous part of the year. Colonel Woodson cited drinking and driving as the greatest hazard. Noting that people consume more alcohol at Christmas time than at any other, he stated that at least 50 percent of all fatal crashes involve a drinking driver and that surveys indicate that this percentage leaps to about 70 during the period immediately including Christmas Day. December, he continued, sees more hours of darkness than any other month. Here, he noted that the death rate at night is about three times that of daylight. The heaviest traffic of the year, much of which moves after darkness, adds to the danger.
