In Rappahannock County, the report shows, there are now two units of government in operation, both of them with property taxing power.
They consist of one municipal government, no township governments, no independent school districts, no special districts and the county government itself.
The number is exactly the same as was tabulated in 1902, when the previous Census of Governments was taken.
By way of comparison, there was a reduction of 12 percent in the number of local governments throughout the United States as a whole in the five year period. The South Atlantic States had a rise of 4 percent while the number in the State of Virginia went down 2 percent.
From the standpoint of population, Rappahannock [kjunty is listed as having one jgency of government for every 2,450 local people. The average elsewhere in the nation is one for ;very 2,340. In most communities, the figures indicate, the trend is toward a streamlining of the governmental process.
