of Wildlife Essay
“Clean Air” will be the topic for the 22nd Wildlife Essay Contest, according to Game Commission Field Educational Services Coordinator Stuart O. Newman who supervises the contest. The Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Virginia Division of the Izaak Walton League of America are co-sponsors of the contest which makes some $3,000 in prize money available to Virginia school children in grades 5 through 12. A record total of 20,004 essays were entered last year on the theme “Water Pollution.”
The contest officially opens September 9 and any Virginia school may enter. A school must be officially entered before student essays can be accepted. Packets of reference materials and contest information are supplied free to participating schools. Students will be competing for prizes ranging from $5 “honorable mentions” to $50.00 “best in grade” awards. High school seniors are also eligible for an $800 college scholarship.
