More Interstate 81
To Open Aug. 24
The final segment of Interstate 81 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia will be opened to traffic on August 24 when the $15.6 million Staunton bypass is cleared of barriers.
Two miles of the 13-mile bypass on the north end were opened earlier this year to provide an improved connection from the interstate to US 11 to get on 1-81 again at Greenville at the south end of the bypass.
The opening of the remaining 11 miles will be featured by a celebration being planned by the Staunton-Augusta County Chamber of Commerce for 11 4um*jqq the,24th.,.r „....
After the ceremony, all through traffic will move on the interstate,, relieving US 11 of much of its congestion in the Staunton area.
Roadside work and the interchange with US 250 at Staunton are not yet complete and traffic from and to the east and west will continue to use regular highways until the interchange can be completed about October.
This opening will complete the State’s longest interstate highway which stretches 325 miles through the Great Valley of Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley from Bristol to Winchester
