Regulations Set
The Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries at their final regulation meeting in Richmond April 17 approved fall hunting regulations which will give bear hunters a longer season and will move the Eastern turkey season into November, reports Executive Director Chester F. Phelps. Proposals to throw all Pittsylvania County in with the Western season and open Northampton County to deer hunting were rejected as was a proposal to close Caroline, King William and King and Queen Counties to fall turkey hunting.
Deer hunters will be faced with seasons and limits nearly identical to those in effect last year. Although bag limits will remain unchanged in Albemarle, Fluvanna and Louisa Counties, doe deer will be legal game on the last of the season only. Surry County was granted 12 days of either sex shooting on the last 12 hunting days. A bucks only season was considered for Craig County but the one doe day was retained for Craig County since the 1968 decrease in kill reflected the change of doe shooting from the first to last day of the season rather than any decrease in deer numbers.
The Eastern fall turkey gobbler season will begin November 17 with the deer season and end December 20. The Western turkey season will open 2 weeks earlier and close on the same date. Bear season will open on November 10 and close December 31.
A spring gobbler season for 1970 was approved with Buchanan, Buckingham, Caroline, (private lands) Dickenson, Highland (private lands) King and Queen, King William, Lee, Russell, Scott, Spotsylvania and Wise Counties exempted. Proposals to permit the use of air boats on Back Bay the year around for hunting and fishing from April 1 through September 15 were approved after a number of written and verbal comments pro and con were heard.
