that seven out of ten older adult pedestrian accidents occurred at intersections in the crosswalk. In one-half of the cases the pedestrian was crossing with the light. Alcohol was not a significant factor in the cause of accidents, and very little evidence of “indifferent suicides” was found.
Under Virginia law the motorist must come to a full stop, if necessary, in order to give the pedestrian right of way. Everyone is legally charged with doing everything in his power to prevent a crash, regardless of who is at fault.
Many accidents occur when the pedestrian attempts to cross the street from behind a parked car, in the middle of the block or when he is walking where the motorist doesn’t expect him.
