By the time the spray rig rolls in on many a com field the com will be up. This changes the weed control spray program from a pre-emergence to a post-emergence situation. And in some instances where the rows are only 24 or 28 inches wide this causes considerable head scratching, and some tough decision making.
For post-emergence weed control in com, V. P. I. recommends 2,4-D; Bavel - D, Atriazine and Linuron. Material cost and your own individual weed problem based on past experience should be the guiding factor in selecting the kind of spray to use.
As a post-emergence spray 2,4-D (amine, LVE, oil soluble amine) may be used from the time com emerges until lay-by time. Small broad leaf weeds are easier to kill, use higher rate on older weeds and harder to kill weeds. After com is 1 ft. high, direct the spray below the top of the com plant.
The addition of dicamba (Bavel - D) improves control of smart weed and other hard to kill species.
Many annuals, both broadleaf and grasses can be controlled by Atrazine. Use over-all application not later than three weeks after planting and before weeds reach l‘/2 inches in height.
Linuron (Lorax) should be applied as a directed spray when com is at least 15 inches and weeds are not more than 8 inches tall. Foliar bum of corn results from contact by this spray material.
Looking over the garden fence the flea bettle appears to be the most active pest at this time. These shinning, black jumping flea size insects have been making lace work of spring kale, turnips and newly set tomato plants. Sevin will give good control of the flea beetle and also knock off the potato and asparagus beetle.
Apple growers will want to circle May 14th on their busy schedule. District fruit producers will be gathering at the Court House here in Washington at 7:30 p.m. to hear George Williams discuss the latest information on chemical thinning and most important there will be a discussion and vote increasing the apple advertising assessment.
