Reports Allocations
Allocations totaling $198,130,717 for construction on Virginia’s interstate, arterial, regular primary and urban road systems were tentatively approved Friday by the State Highway Commission. The funds, for the fiscal year beginning July 1, are $12.8 million less than the sum for the current year because of a large reduction in Virginia’s federal apportionment for the interstate system.
Actually, Virginia’s federal appropriation for interstate highways will be down by about some $23 million, but this is partially off-set in the total allocations announced today by increased amounts for other road systems.
The Federal Highway Administration has revised its interstate apportionment factors so that less money will go to states on schedule or ahead, while larger amounts will be distributed to states behind schedule. The Administration said this was to permit substantially the same completion time nation-wide.
Virginia, with 660 miles of its 1,060-mile interstate system open to traffic, is ahead of a number of states, the Highway Commission noted.
Funds for the arterial, regular primary and urban systems will increase in the coming year, as a result of larger amounts available from both State and federal sources for these roads.
