Charge on Sunday
A symbolic military charge recalling the heroism of 250 teen-age cadets of Virginia Military Institute in the 1864 Battle of New Market will highlight 105th anniversary ceremonies at the Battlefield Park in New Market at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 11. a Current VMI cadets and members of reactivated Civil War units will reenact the battle in which 57 cadets were wounded, 10 of them fatally. A narration by Jim MacNeil of Harrisonburg, producer and director of the program, will accompany the action.
Two special exhibits will als< be on display at the BattlefieU Park Sunday. Col. E. H. Hoffmai of Woodstock will have some 2! models of artillery pieces datinj from 200 B.C. through the Civi War. Charles J. Affleck o Winchester has loaned th( Battlefield Park a portion of hi: large private collection o: Confederate bonds and notes.
During the reenactment severa Civil War cannon will fire a: uniformed men charge from th< historic farmhouse to the crest o: the hill 1 where Union cannor stood.
Reactivated Civil War unit) joining the host New Markel group, Company E, 33rd Virginia will be Company I, 10th Virginii of Elkton; First Valley Rangers ol Waynesboro; Company K, 5tl Virginia of Winchester and th< First Maryland from Baltimore Units from other Virginia Maryland and North Carolinj towns are also expected tc participate.
A brief commemorative ceremony sponsored by the Women’s Memorial Society will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St Matthew’s cemetery in New Market. This program has been conducted annually for over 100 years by the women of New Market in memory of the men who lost their lives in the 1864 Battle of New Market. .
