For those hundreds of Virginians who have visited Arcadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine, and for those who will do so in the future some historical items may be of interest.
Established in 1916, Arcadia is one of the smallest parks in the national system but has proven one of the most important. Because of its proximity to population centers in the east, it is one of the most heavily used in the nation. Last year there were 2,303,300 visatations to the park - some 200,000 more than the preceding year.
It was the first national park established east of the Mississippi and is still the only one on the east coast except for the Everglades. (Cape Cod and Hatteras are national recreation areas.) It is the onlynational park in the east with a rocky shoreline.
There are many miles of good motor roads in the Park. Notable among them are famed Ocean Drive along the spectacular eastern shore of Mount Desert Island; Lower Mountain Road running from Park headquarters to Jordan Pond; Cadillac Mountain Road, an easy climb to the peak of the highest elevation on the eastern seaboard of the United States; and Sargent Drive along the eastern shore of Somes Sound.
The Park is remarkable in its combination of sea, mountains, forest and fresh water lakes. Although some of the motor roads are beginning to get a little crowded by the peak of summer, it is easy to find wilderness and
