Those eligible to vote in the community committee elections also have the right to nominate by petition candidates for committee membership. Such petitions, each one nominating one candidate and signed by six or more eligible voters, must be filed at the Rappahannock County ASCS Office before August 22, 1969. Eligible voters may sign as many petitions as they wish.
Additional nominations may be made by the incumbent A SC community and county committees. Regulations require that where minority group members (Negro, American Indian, Spanish-American, and Oriental) make up at least 10 percent of the eligible voters in a community, a minority group member must be put on the slate of candidates unless one or more is nominated by petition.
“Generally, nominees must live in the community in which they are candidates and must be eligible to vote in the ASC community election,” said Chairman Barksdale. He added, “Eligible voters include all persons with farm interests as owners, tenants, or sharecroppers who are eligible to participate in any program administered by ASCS.” Other details on eligibility of candidates-such as restriction against political office-holders, or fulltime Department of Agriculture employees-may be obtained at the County ASCS Office.”
