A $2,697,673 contract to build the first segment of the Arterial U. S. Rte. 29 bypass of Culpeper has been awarded by the State Highway Commission.

The contract went to Basic Construction Co. of Newport News which submitted the lowest of four bids received by the Department of Highways when proposals were opened July 23.

The segment, 3.44 miles long, will provide a four-lane divided highway from the present divided highway west of Culpeper to Route 3 near the east corporate limits. Interchanges will be provided at Route 15, and at Routes 3 and 522 for traffic to and from the east and south.

The Highway Department hopes to advertise this fall for bids on the 4.1-mile north segment of the bypass.
