Modem family living has moved the table for dining all about the house — both indoors and out Today’s family realizing the value of mealtime as a time of being together, move the “eating center” as needed to the areas ol the house in which all member: find enjoyment. This, coupled with the trend toward saving time and energy, smaller living space, family television viewing, living out-of-doors and the family sharing of games, makes for emphasis on more casual meal service than formerly.
Any meal may now be served in the living room, dining alcove, breakfast nook, patio, porch or garden as well as in the real dining room. It may be served on the dining table or on the kitchen table, the breakfast bar, on a tray, a card table, or on a coffee table. No matter where it is served, the meal should be a happy occasion of family and guests. It may be a traditional meal served family style at the dining room table or with the plates served from the kitchen. It may be a buffet meal, a barbecue, a snack or a party where ever or whatever the meal, each place should be set attractively.
Hie term “casual” is applied to meals served in the modem way, but casual does not mean “careless”. Nor does casual dining mean the omission of good taste or the sacrifice of charm. Gracious hospitality demands careful attention to details of comfort and appearance in providing today’s setting for well prepared food. Chairs, benches or stools should be of the right height for tables, tray stands or counters. Use a dull surfaced colored table covering instead of bright white for comfort when the table is set in the sun. Tray meal appointments that neither slip, slide nor tip over easily, are still evidence of such thoughtful care. This carefully casual living, emphasizing the simpler ways of meal time management, also is thoughtful of the homemaker. Now she can enjoy mealtime with family and guest.
