Amissville Man
Fatally Shot
Waller Groves of Jeffersonton has been charged with the shooting death of Russell Thomas Haines, 35, of Amissville. The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday morning in the home of Roy Jordan on Route 606 near Flint Hill.
Groves is being retained in Rappahannock County jail. No date has been set for a preliminary hearing.
Haines was shot four times with a pistol but the murder weapon has not been found. Groves apparently threw it away as he fled from the scene of the shooting. With the aid of the trained police dog, Groves was apprehended about 4:30 a.m. in a building nearby.
An autopsy has been performed by the medical examiner in Richmond, but a report has not yet been released. A funeral service for Haines was held Tuesday. (Obituary inside).
Sheriff C. K. Estes and Trooper J. B. Willis headed the investigation.
